Looking for the Saga comic books in order? Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ space-opera epic launched in 2012, went on hiatus twice, and has been collected in several formats — so a clear reading guide helps. Here is the full Saga reading order for 2026, from the trades to the box set to the deluxe hardcovers.
Saga Comic Books in Order: All 9 Trades
Each Saga trade collects six chapters (issues) of the ongoing series. Read them in this order:
- Saga Vol. 1 — Chapters 1–6: Alana (a winged Landfall soldier) and Marko (a horned Wreath prisoner) meet, fall in love, and flee a galactic war with their newborn daughter Hazel.
- Saga Vol. 2 — Chapters 7–12: The family is hunted by Prince Robot IV, freelance killers The Will and The Stalk, and the merciless Lying Cat.
- Saga Vol. 3 — Chapters 13–18: The saga’s most heartbreaking arc yet, as the family reaches the planet Quietus and loses one of its own.
- Saga Vol. 4 — Chapters 19–24: A time jump to Hazel’s school years — and the war catches up in a new way.
- Saga Vol. 5 — Chapters 25–30: Prison planet, journalistic conspiracy, and the return of the original hunter.
- Saga Vol. 6 — Chapters 31–36: Alana and Marko are torn apart; each fights to reunite the family.
- Saga Vol. 7 — Chapters 37–42: The war escalates into something darker, and Hazel begins narrating more of her own story.
- Saga Vol. 8 — Chapters 43–48: Old enemies resurface and the family is scattered once more.
- Saga Vol. 9 — Chapters 49–54: The end of the first half of the story — Vaughan planned the epic as a 108-issue saga, and volume 9 closes chapter 54.
The Box Set and the Hardcover “Books”
For collectors, Image Comics offers two bigger packages:
- The Saga Box Set collects all nine trades (Vol. 1–9) in one package — the cheapest way to own the whole first half of the series.
- The Deluxe Hardcovers group three trades each: Saga: Book One (issues #1–18), Book Two (#19–36), and Book Three (#37–54). A fourth hardcover collecting the post-hiatus issues is expected.
Where Does Saga Stand in 2026?
After resuming from its first hiatus in January 2022 with issue #55, the series published through issue #72 in March 2025, then entered another pause. According to the series’ Wikipedia page, Vaughan has said a fourth hardcover and new issues are coming, and in September 2026 Fiona Staples posted that she had resumed work on the series after taking time for her health.
So: the 9 trades take you through issue #54. Issues #55–72 (the “second half”) are collected in trades Vol. 10–12 — check with Image Comics or your local comic shop for the latest volume numbers, since trade numbering continues past the box set.
What to Expect Next: Saga’s Second Half
Vaughan has described Saga as a planned 108-issue epic — meaning roughly 54 more issues remain after the mid-point. The chapters published since the 2022 return (issues #55–72) shift the focus to Hazel as a young adult, the aftermath of the first half’s losses, and a media-satire storyline about how the war is reported and remembered. Expect the collected second half to feel more political and more personal at once.
Because of the hiatus, trade paperback numbering is the easiest way to track where you are: Vol. 9 ends at chapter 54, and each new trade adds six chapters. If you finish Vol. 9 and want more immediately, the single issues #55–72 are available digitally — but most readers are fine waiting for the trades, which is exactly how Vaughan and Staples intend the story to be read.
Why Read Saga?
Saga has won multiple Eisner Awards, a Hugo Award, and the British Fantasy Award, with every trade debuting as a bestseller. It is a story about love, parenthood, and war disguised as a wildly imaginative sci-fi fantasy — funny, devastating, and unlike anything else in comics.
One note for new readers: Saga is rated Mature. The content is adult (violence, sexuality, language), even though its heart is a family story. Vaughan famously described the goal as writing for grown-ups who grew up on Star Wars — and he succeeded.
